Family
Martin Marty, son of a Lutheran school teacher, was the second of three children, with a sister, Mildred Burger, who lives Fort Wayne, Indiana, and a brother, Myron (Mike) Marty, who lives in Monticello, Illinois.
Marty Offspring
Frances Garcia Carlson originally came into the family through foster care in 1962; married and the mother of a daughter, she is a high school teacher in Evanston, Illlinois. Ursula Meyer Newcomb, Harriet’s daughter, is a professor in theater at the University of California, San Diego. Married and the mother of a son, she and her husband are also regulars in the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Joel Marty, oldest son of Marty and the late Elsa Schumacher Marty (d. 1981), works in the management areas for profits and non-profits in Minneapolis; he and his wife have three sons, two of them married, plus two grandchildren. His brothers are: John Jaarsma Marty, a fifth-term state senator in Minnesota, who combines public service with family life; he and his wife have two children. Peter Ward Marty is a parish pastor in Davenport, Iowa; he and his wife also have two children. Micah Marty, a Chicagoan, is a photographer and graphic designer; he has produced four books with Martin Marty.
